The Association for the Improvement of Minorities will be celebrating the 41st Anniversary of our organization in Cincinnati, Ohio, August 9-15, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. Our theme this year is “Standing on Tradition...Building a Legacy,” and our goal is to encourage all who attend, to remember where we have come from and continue to build upon the legacy that is part of our rich history and commit to excellence
Background:
The Association for the Improvement of Minorities in the Internal Revenue Service, (AIM-IRS) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose purpose is to enhance career advancement opportunities for minorities within the Internal Revenue Service thru education and mentoring. We began in 1969 after recognizing a need to collectively overcome racial barriers that were limiting promotion opportunities for minorities, specifically African Americans.
IRS has a long history as one of the first federal minority employee organizations with significant impact to thousands of members nationwide. We traditionally have an Annual Business Meeting and Training Seminar and have done so since 1969 with attendance ranging from 300 to 1,000 participants. Over the years we have mentored and conducted training seminars which were key to the empowerment of African American and other minority employees within the Internal Revenue Service. In addition to the many services we offer our members, we also participate in numerous community service projects including but not limited to:
- Providing volunteers to prepare income tax returns free of charge for low income taxpayers
- Providing volunteers to mentor students through our Adopt-a- School Program
- Providing scholarships to high school and college students
- Partnering with other community non-profit organizations that address critical needs of African Americans
- Partnering with local schools and other educational institutions in host sites to provide scholarships to youth desiring to attend our Junior Conference
